Zendaya, who portrays MJ in the MCU’s Spider-Man films may have just revealed a potential threat against Peter in Spider-Man 3.

Speculation has run rampant for the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s untitled third Spider-Man instalment starring both Tom Holland and Zendaya. Casting news and reports have set the rumour mill on fire over the past couple of months, as fans try to figure out what the film is actually going to be about.

While the casting of Alfred Molina as Doc Ock, Jamie Foxx as Electro and Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange have all hinted at a multiverse storyline, and a connection to both Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and WandaVisionZendaya has indicated that Spider-Man and allies may be facing another threat.

In an interview with fellow actor Carey Mulligan via Variety, Mulligan asked Zendaya about how filming Spider-Man was going and how far into the series they were, which led to a very surprising response from Zendaya. She commented:

"“It’s our third. These things go by so fast. We still have a lot left to do. It’s like running from aliens and things you can’t see. Part of that is kind of fun. A lot of what we do is escapism, just being able to play a teenager again.”"

The word “aliens” being used is intriguing, as there have been no rumours of aliens been involved in the film’s plot. With the reports and rumours indicating a storyline involving a multitude of different characters and villains from other Spider-Man films, it seems like a strange fit for the movie.

Are Skrulls the villains of Spider-Man 3?

Spider-Man: Far From Home did feature a cameo from Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, who was posing as Nick Fury throughout the film. His appearance in the post credits scene seems more likely to be a small set up for the Secret Invasion series announced for Disney+, however could this comment suggest the Skrulls are returning for the Spider-Man sequel?

It would be a good way to further set up Secret Invasion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and maybe Spider-Man could have a role in the series, as we know basically nothing besides Ben Mendelsohn and Samuel L Jackson appearing in the show.

We will have to wait and see what happens when the official synopsis and trailers are officially released for the film, as Spider-Man 3 is set to swing into theatres in December.
