Tom Holland finally opens up about those Spider-Man 3 rumors

Tom Holland has denied rumours that former Spider-Men Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire will be appearing in the MCU’s Spider-Man 3.

Tom Holland has opened up on the possibility of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Spider-Man 3. The former Spider-Men have been rumoured to appear in the film for months, as reports of the film’s plot being connected to WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ multiverse plotline have been doing the rounds.

The confirmed casting of Alfred Molina and Jamie Foxx in their roles from previous Spider-Man films, and the rumours of other villains joining the epic adventure had convinced fans that the two former Spider-Men would be appearing alongside Tom Holland.

However, despite the persistent rumours, Tom Holland has dismissed the claims as not true during an interview with Esquire.

"“No, no, they will not be appearing in this film… Unless they have hidden the most massive piece of information from me, which I think is too big of a secret for them to keep from me. But as of yet, no. It’ll be a continuation of the Spider-Man movies that we’ve been making.”"

While his response seemed pretty defiant, fans are sceptical due to Holland’s other comments throughout the same interview, where the Spider-Man actor stated that he did not know much about the plot of the film despite the filming being well underway:

"“I honestly have no idea what this film is about and I’m eight weeks into shooting it.”"

Are Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man 3?

It’s unknown if Garfield and Maguire will appear or not. Tom Holland has been known to humorously spoil movies, with the actor getting a bit of a reputation for accidentally sharing spoilers from his Spider-Man movies and appearances in the Avengers franchise. With that in mind, he could simply be trying to keep the appearances from Garfield and Maguire a secret or it is possible that Marvel Studios have kept their appearances hidden from Holland – although that is unlikely.

The comments made by Holland could also be accurate and the two former Wall-Crawlers are not making an appearance in the film, much to the disappointment of fans.

Tobey Maguire has not made an appearance as Peter Parker since 2007’s Spider-Man 3, with Andrew Garfield’s last appearance as Spider-Man coming in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. 

Even though Holland’s comments indicate the two actors will not be appearing, it could likely be misdirect to convince fans they are not appearing before a big reveal. Only time will tell whether the two actors appear.

While we could find out when the film releases its first trailer, we may have to wait until the untitled Spider-Man 3 swings into theatres on December 17, 2021.
