The DCEU has found its Blue Beetle in Xolo Maridueña.

In an exclusive from The Wrap, it has been revealed that Xolo Maridueña is in talks to play the leading role of Jamie Reyes in Blue Beetle – an upcoming superhero film exclusively for HBO Max set within the DC Extended Universe.

Maridueña is best known for his role as Miguel Diaz in The Karate Kid spin-off television series, Cobra Kai, which continues the original movie franchise. He was also a series regular on NBC’s Parenthood, playing Victor Graham for a number of seasons.

The Jaime Reyes of Blue Beetle

Jamie Reyes was introduced to DC Comics in Infinite Crisis No. 3 in 2006 then appeared as the third incarnation of Blue Beetle in Infinite Crisis No. 5 during the same year. Reyes was created by writers Keith Giffen and John Rogers with artist Cully Hammer. He takes on the mantle of Blue Beetle after Dan Garrett and Ted Kord – who were products of Fox and Charlton Comics respectively before the rights eventually went to DC. Over the years, backstories were retconned to link the legacy characters altogether.

More from DCEU

Reyes, a teenage Mexican-American boy from El Paso, Texas, discovered the ancient scarab that bestowed the original Beetle – Garrett – with his powers and he took on the mantle after the late Ted Kord. The scarab, dubbed “Kaji Dha”, originally thought to have been an Egyptian deity was actually of alien origin from the extraterrestrial race known as The Reach. The scarab latched on Reyes’ spine.

When the scarab envelops Reyes into nigh-impenetrable armor, it grants the host enhanced strength, durability and flight. The armor provides Reyes with a wide array of weaponry in addition to energy shields and cannons that generate energy blasts including access to many otherworldly languages.

When does the DCEU’s Blue Beetle come out?

A live-action Blue Beetle movie has been in development since the fall of 2018. At one point Booster Gold was rumored to make an appearance. Like another DC-related property, Batgirl, pre-production has been kicked into a higher gear in recent months as both will be HBO Max-exclusive movies.

Back in February, Angel Manuel Soto signed on as director and principal photography is expected to begin in early 2022. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer has written the screenplay while John Rickard is producing with Zev Foreman.

Blue Beetle is expected to arrive on HBO Max in 2023.
