Marvel Comics: Important moments of the month (February 2023)
By Mark Lynch
Here are the five most important Marvel comic book moments of February 2023 and what happened within the issues.
There’s always something going on in Marvel Comics. This month, Carnage came back in the pages of Deadpool by Alyssa Wong. In Fantastic Four No. 4 by Ryan North, readers discover why New Yorkers aren’t happy with Marvel’s First Family.
Also, in Sabretooth and the Exiles, Victor Creed finds out his son (Graydon Creed) has been killing versions of him throughout the multiverse. Those weren’t the only noteworthy Marvel Comics moments. The five comic books below will affect the future of Marvel.
Sinister’ s plan backfires
Marvel comic: Immoral X-Men No. 1
Guest Writer: Kieron Gillen
Sins of Sinister No. 1 showed Nathaniel Essex (Mr. Sinister) master plan for world domination. He was using Krakoa’s Resurrection Protocols to take over Krakoa to add pieces of his personality to anyone that was brought back to life. With these mutants under his control, Sinister could take over Krakoa and then the world.
Like most villains, his arrogance was his downfall. He thought adding pieces of his personality would be enough to make the Quiet Council do what he wants. Not only did that plan fail, but he’s also now at their mercy. Emma Frost in particular. She made Essex beg for mercy before allowing him to live.
Peter Parker commits to Black Cat
Marvel comic: Amazing Spider-Man No. 20
Guest Writer: Joe Kelly
Since the beginning of Zeb Wells’ new Amazing Spider-Man run, Peter Parker and Mary Jane are no longer a couple. Peter did something so unforgivable that she wants nothing to do with him. In fact, MJ started a new life with someone and has kids. Nevertheless, Peter still loves her.
At the end of Amazing Spider-Man No. 20, Peter admits to Black Cat and himself that he still loves her, but the love has changed. Cat kisses him because she finally felt like she could trust Peter with her heart.
Where are the dead
Marvel comic: Thor No. 31
Writer: Torunn Gronbekk
Thor’s sister Laussa (who’s grown up due to time travel) instructed her brother to check on his dead. When he arrived in Valhalla, there were no dead to be found. This led him and Valkyrie (Jane Foster) to Hel. Another realm for the dead that was empty. The most notable missing person was the ruler of Hel, Hela. At the end of the issue, readers see that she’s the captive of Victor von Doom. It looks like Doom wants armageddon and needs Hela to accomplish that goal.
Agatha Harkness is young again
Marvel comic: Midnight Suns No. 5
Writer: Ethan Sacks
The Midnight Suns mini-series was a fun ride with an amazing cover and interior art. However, it didn’t seem like there would be major moments in the series. The heroes were going to save the world and everything would go back to normal. Half of that ended up being true.
At the end of the series, Agatha Harkness regains her youth. This should come with a magical power boost. Now the question is whether or not she’ll continue to help or become a villain.
Logan kills Beast
Marvel comic: Wolverine No. 30
Writer: Benjamin Percy
After Beast killed Logan and treated him like a weapon, Hank McCoy knew that a reckoning was coming. He’s lucky he had the foresight to prepare himself. When Logan caught up to him, he gave Beast a chance to explain himself. Beast didn’t have anything to say, so Logan killed him. That wasn’t the end of it. Beast had a backup of himself ready in case he died. The last thing readers see is Beast saying that he knew this was coming and, “…everything is about to change.”
Wolverine: The Beast Agenda will conclude with Beast being part of the Quiet Council. What happens to Logan is up in the air. Does he end up in The Pit or does he leave Krakoa. This writer thinks the latter. This will also come up again in Fall of X.
