Avengers: Doomsday to feature villains we never thought we'd see again, reports say

A lot of familiar faces are bound to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, but the MCU crossover could also feature the appearance of very unlikely characters.

It is no secret that Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be the biggest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie ever made. The highly anticipated crossover will see Earth's Mightiest Heroes join forces with the X-Men, Thunderbolts, and Fantastic Four for the first time in cinematic history to rise against Doctor Doom. As if that wasn't enough, Marvel has already dropped big bombshells by revealing that Steve Rogers will be back in action and that fans will see the return of legendary characters such as Patrick Stewart's Professor X and Ian McKellen's Magneto.

If those are the kinds of reveals that Disney is comfortable making now, then what surprises are being saved for the release date?

Rumors suggest that Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man will also team up with Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and that Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool will join the party as well. But just when it seemed there was no room for additional characters to be part of the film, a new report indicates otherwise.

Avengers: Doomsday will reportedly feature the return of Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man villains

According to renowned insider Daniel Richtman, Magneto fights against Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man villains in the script of Avengers: Doomsday. Furthermore, scooper MyTimeToShineHello stated that Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus will also appear in the upcoming superhero crossover.

The story implications of this would be really interesting. It has been reported that Avengers: Doomsday will open things up with a big incursion between the X-Men's universe and the Earth where Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker lives. To prevent both realities from being completely erased in the process, the X-Men will reportedly use a device to destroy just Tobey's universe and spare theirs.

If that were to be the case, then it could be the perfect opportunity for the likes of Magneto to face the Green Goblin or Doctor Octopus. After all, it has been rumored that Tobey's version of the wall-crawler will go against Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool, with leaked set pictures doubling down on this idea. There's just one small problem: Doctor Octopus and the Green Goblin are dead in Sam Raimi's universe.

Throughout the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, audiences saw the three live-action Spider-Men join forces to cure villains they had already faced in the past before returning them to their respective universes. However, the iterations of the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus we saw in the movie were variants. Sam Raimi's true original versions of these villains are long gone now.

It will be interesting to see how Marvel acknowledges the situation (if they even do so) and how it explains why the likes of Doctor Octopus are suddenly back. Otherwise, there's a chance that Sandman will be the only one to return, since he never died throughout the events of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3.

Another possibility is that these villains don't return in the opening of Avengers: Doomsday, but rather towards the end of the film, when the multiverse as a whole starts to collapse and we get the chance to see characters from multiple realities on the big screen. Of course, it's always important to take rumors with a grain of salt, as Spider-Man's villains may not end up appearing in the final cut of the film. On the bright side, it would appear that Tobey himself will indeed join Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

It has been reported that Marvel could unveil "Peter 2's" return as soon as this year's San Diego Comic-Con. After all, this is one of the last opportunities Marvel has to use his character before the Multiverse Saga comes to an end, so why not make the most of the opportunity? Fortunately, it shouldn't be long before we have some concrete answers, as SDCC will take place from July 23 to 26, 2026.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
