Charlie Cox opens up about the likelihood of a Daredevil film

We've seen Daredevil steal the spotlight on the small screen, so is it time for him to do the same on the big screen? This is what Charlie Cox had to say.

When the Marvel Cinematic Universe first started, it comprised multiple movies all telling a single interconnected narrative. Soon, this expansive world began to overflow the boundaries of movie theaters and breach into the small screen as well. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was the first TV series that would bring these superhero tales onto another medium, followed by Agent Carter and the Inhumans (though many people like to pretend that last one didn't happen). However, history was made the day Daredevil was released on Netflix.

The Devil of Hell's Kitchen would be the first big Marvel hero to star in his own series, "connected" to the wider MCU. Granted, these connections didn't go past a few nods to the events of The Avengers at first, but it was more than enough to make us hopeful about a bigger future for the character. Eventually, Matt Murdock became a staple of Marvel Television with 3 seasons of a Netflix adaptation, as well as a "revival" in the form of Born Again. Now, he's even reported to become the protagonist of a Defenders reunion on Disney+. There's no denying that the street-level hero is at the center of the spotlight, which has brought a lot of questions about his future.

While there's a lot more blind justice coming on television, fans have been optimistic about Daredevil showing up in movie theaters as well. Unfortunately, Charlie Cox has confirmed that his character won't join Earth's Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Doomsday. But could there still be hope for him to star in his own stand-alone movie?

Charlie Cox gives his thoughts on a Daredevil movie

During an interview for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, Charlie Cox was asked what it would take for a Daredevil feature film to become a reality. While the beloved actor admitted that he isn't sure if that will eventually happen, he hinted that he'd be open to the opportunity:

"I'm the worst person to ask. I have no idea. I don't know. You have to ask the grown-ups. I don't know anything, and I like not knowing anything, you know? The only thing I'll say is I'm such a happy camper. I'm so thrilled to be here."

Furthermore, Charlie also revealed that the first two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again were screened in a movie theater, which has allowed him to see his character on the big screen:

"Every season, we get to see the first two episodes on the big screen, so I get that experience. And it is a shame because, particularly with that [Born Again] pilot, it's such a cinematic episode that it feels like it deserves to be seen on the big screen."

Renowned industry insider Alex Perez has reported that Spider-Man: Brand New Day—along with other upcoming Spider-Man movies—will share a connection with the events of Daredevil: Born Again. Furthermore, it was also rumored that Spider-Man 5 would act as the adaptation of the Devil's Reign comic book storyline, which saw multiple heroes come together to stand up against New York's Mayor, the Kingpin, and his Thunderbolts task force. Among those fighting for the good cause were Daredevil, Ben Reilly, and Miles Morales. So even if Peter Parker wasn't present, Spider-Man was surely involved in the plot.

The final piece of the puzzle was the confirmation that Daredevil: Born Again purposely included a Spider-Man easter egg at the exact moment Matt says he'll need an army to stop Wilson Fisk. With that in mind, it seems that Marvel intends the two street-level heroes to cross paths in a story worthy of the big screen. Besides, even if Matt truly misses out on the events of Avengers: Doomsday, it would be shocking if he and the rest of the Defenders were nowhere to be found once Avengers: Secret Wars releases. After all, the collapse of the multiverse will affect everyone in the MCU, and not just a select few.

Interestingly enough, Vincent D'Onofrio has revealed that it's complicated for Marvel to use the Kingpin in movies because of Sony's ownership rights over the character. However, it has also been reported that this isn't a complete impossibility either. The supervillain could show up in a film as long as there are other characters with whom he shared the screen before. That means Matt Murdock is the key, and as long as he's present, his arch-nemesis could make a terrifying entrance too.

Daredevil is a close friend of Spider-Man in comic book pages. Similarly, the Kingpin is one of the wall-crawler's most popular villains. Due to this, fans have been asking to see the three of them cross paths in an MCU project. Hopefully, our wishes will come true and we'll get to see Charlie Cox and Tom Holland sharing the big screen soon enough.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 will be released in March 2026.
