It’s been years since The Batman was first released, giving us a moviegoing experience for the caped crusader unlike any other. And while The Batman: Part II is in the works, it’ll be a long time before we see Part III, as James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, really just put the nail in the coffin.
What I mean by this is that there’s been a rumor floating around that both The Batman: Part II and The Batman: Part III were filming simultaneously. Gunn did a Q&A with fans over on Threads, and when someone asked if both were being filmed simultaneously, he said, “I can deny.”
*Sigh*… I don’t even know how to respond to that.
I mean, it’s not that surprising, as I don’t believe Part III’s script has even been completed yet. Maybe fans were thinking that Gunn was just secretly keeping it in his pocket and was going to surprise fans with it. But to hear him straight up say that they weren’t doing it at all does bother me.
This gap between The Batman films is horrible.
Do you know when the first The Batman film was released? Back in 2022. That’s right, already four years ago. We were still at the tail end of COVID-19 during that time, and things were beginning to wind down with lockdown. The Batman: Part II has received so many devastating delays to its release date that now it's going to be the longest gap between any Batman film ever.
For context, the last serious Batman trilogy that we had, with Christian Bale in the titular role, released all three films within seven years, and between each there was about a three-year gap—2005, 2008, and then the last was the longest, with four years, with a release in 2012. Already, by the time this new film is released on Feb. 18, 2028, it will have been six years.
That is just too dang long for the next movie in a trilogy to be filmed. And now it makes me worry for the third film because how long is that going to take?
Production for the second film has begun. Hopefully that release date will stay put for once. And there is a lot to look forward to with both the story and the cast. Casting Sebastian Stan as Two-Face is quite possibly a God-tier casting choice, and then to top it all off, possibly having Scarlet Johansson reportedly play Poison Ivy as the main villain is even better.
Even so, while this news is great, it still worries me about the future of this Batman trilogy. People are excited for the next Matt Reeves adaptation and love Robert Pattinson as the main character. But if we’re going to have to wait another six years for the next movie, I don’t think I’m going to be able to make it. Hopefully, it won’t be that bad once this film releases…in two years. Ugh, can someone make a time machine?
