It goes without saying that the Super Bowl is one of the biggest nights on the TV calendar. The sporting event brings audiences of all kinds together, and this year's edition will look to do the exact same when the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots square off against each other for the biggest prize in American football. We could also say the same for the highly-anticipated Half-Time Show performance from the global phenomenon Bad Bunny, who is set to bring the house down with a captivating set.
The Super Bowl LX is undoubtedly going to be a major spectacle. The question is: Which movie and TV studios have scheduled trailers and ad spots for the big event? And, perhaps more importantly, is Marvel Studios planning to surprise fans with some big trailers?
Although fans were expecting to see the Marvel Cinematic Universe showcase a number of trailers this year, replicating the success it previously saw with previews and teasers for Deadpool and Wolverine, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thunderbolts*, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and more, it has thrown a spanner in the works that nobody saw coming.
Marvel won't release Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailers
In what can only be described as one of the most disappointing announcements of the week, Marvel Studios won't be releasing any new trailers at tonight's Super Bowl LX. Yes, this is in spite of the fact that it has two major releases coming this year - and one already on the horizon for this July. It was Deadline who confirmed the studio's intentions for this year's event when the outlet revealed which trailers we can expect from the Super Bowl tonight.
Fans were floored by the revelation as they were expecting to see at least one of the upcoming MCU movies showcased at the event. Those movies are Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Of the two, it was the Avengers trailer that seemed more likely. Even though it won't be arriving in movie theaters until December, the studio has already gone full-throttle on the promo train, launching four brand new teasers over the holiday season (each of which were paired with the theatrical release of Avatar: Fire and Ash). As those were character-driven, reports claimed that there would likely be a more official teaser trailer that may have even showcased Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom.
Needless to say, fans were let down by the confirmation that the trailer wouldn't be coming out. Adding to that, the fact that Spider-Man: Brand New Day won't have its first trailer released - despite coming out this summer! - was the salt in the wound. Given that its release is much closer than Avengers: Doomsday's, it's wild that it's already four trailers behind that one (and it too had its first trailer leaked just a few weeks back!) Where is the urgency for that one?!
So, why aren't these MCU trailers taking up one/two of the coveted ad spots at the Super Bowl LX? There are likely multiple reasons for that? For one, Marvel did just release four trailers for Avengers: Doomsday - all of which are continuing to generate buzz for the upcoming movie. Moreover, the ad spots cost a reported $7 - 10 million. Given that both Avengers and Spider-Man will likely do very well on their own (both are expected to gross at least $1 billion each given the performances from both respective MCU subfranchises), it's understandable that the studios involved might give this particular event a miss.
Speaking of studios, Marvel aren't the only studio involved in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Sony owns the movie rights to the Spider-Man character (and all of his supporting characters) so, even though they share the ownership of Brand New Day, they could very well have opted not to spotlight the film here as Sony usually gives the Super Bowl a miss.
Although it goes without saying that this is a disappointing outcome for Marvel fans, we can expect to see trailers from The Mandalorian and Grogu, Hoppers, Minions 3, Toy Story 5, Disclosure Day, Michael, and Scream 7.
