Marvel fans beside themselves after heartbreaking Spider-Man: Brand New Day update

If you were hoping to get your first look at Spider-Man: Brand New Day at a major sporting even this weekend, you'll be disappointed.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe just kicked off what is shaping up to be a major year for the beloved franchise with Wonder Man and it will very quickly succeed that with the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. But come the summer and the movies will be featuring their own MCU adventures, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day looks to bring our favorite webslinger back for his fourth solo installment in the long-running superhero saga.

Tom Holland returns for the upcoming film, alongside Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, and there is a host of new arrivals too - including Stranger Things star Sadie Sink, who has been cast in a mystery role. MCU veterans Mark Ruffalo and Jon Bernthal will also bring the Hulk and the Punisher to Spidey's tale for the first time, so there is a lot to be excited about. Those are also a lot of reasons why fans want to see the first trailer.

Unfortunately, the most recent update about that potential trailer release has completely caught fans off-guard - and not for the right reasons.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer reportedly won't release at the Super Bowl after all

If you - like me and so many other Spider-Man fans - were hoping that the first official trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day would be among the big releases during the Super Bowl on Sunday night, you'll understandably be disappointed to learn that it won't be coming after all. At least not according to Deadline, who delivered their annual preview of what we can expect from the Super Bowl trailers and revealed that Marvel Studios would be sitting this one out.

This has come as a surprise to fans as Marvel Studios always uses the hype of the Super Bowl to launch a trailer for one of its upcoming movies. It's even more surprising considering that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to release on July 31 and we haven't had any kind of first official look at it yet - and Avengers: Doomsday, which is coming out on December 18, has already unveiled four teaser trailers. That movie won't be releasing a fifth trailer at Super Bowl LX either, meaning that Marvel will break a long-standing tradition.

There is a point to be argued here on the Sony side of things. That studio owns the movie rights to Spidey and his collection of characters so, even though Brand New Day takes place in the MCU (with Marvel Studios co-producing), it's still technically a Sony movie. And, as Sony often skips the Super Bowl, it's not too surprising that a new look at Spidey won't debut at the upcoming event... even if it probably should.

With Marvel front-loading the beginning of this year with four Avengers: Doomsday trailers and Sony possibly choosing not to release a trailer at the Super Bowl, fans are beginning to worry that Spider-Man 4 is being treated as a bit of an afterthought. And, considering that the last Spider-Man movie - 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home - made just shy of $2 billion, that's not something that either studio should be doing.

Furthermore, a trailer for Brand New Day somehow leaked online a few weeks back - which, ironically, came in the midst of the mass leaking of the Avengers: Doomsday trailers - and it very quickly sent the internet into meltdown (despite the poor quality). So, there is clearly a demand for this movie and fans want to see Tom Holland back on our screens as Peter Parker.

The Super Bowl LX would have been the perfect place to unveil the first official trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Granted, given that the ad-slots reportedly cost up to $10 million, it's understandable that some studios are giving it a miss this year, but considering that Brand New Day has the potential to make at least $1 billion at the box office, the Super Bowl boost would have been a great way to launch the film's marketing campaign.

Right now, it sounds like the big trailers we can expect from the event will be The Mandalorian and Grogu, Scream 7, Michael, Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Minions 3, Disclosure Day, and Hoppers.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in movie theaters on July 31, 2026.
