Marvel makes Daredevil: Born Again season 3 announcement we didn't see coming

Daredevil: Born Again season 3 is coming next year and it will bring with it a major change to the show's placement in the MCU timeline.

To say that Daredevil: Born Again season 2 took the world by storm would be an understatement. Going into it we thought - we hoped - it might be the gritty continuation of the original Netflix series that the first season only marginally managed to be towards the end of its run. From the moment it began, it became clear that it was about to outdo expectations. Eight episodes later, it obliterated them.

The long wait now begins for the third season, which may well be even more daunting after that incredible finale. The closing moments of that episode made it clear that there are going to be some big changes in the upcoming season and, in order to accommodate some of them, it sounds like the Marvel Cinematic Universe show going to be skipping over a lot of the fallout.

Marvel TV boss confirms year-long time-jump for Daredevil: Born Again season 3

Marvel Studios' Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, has revealed that Daredevil: Born Again season 3 will be taking a relatively significant time-jump. The Marvel TV boss recently spoke to Screen Rant about the fallout of the second season, revealing that it won't be anything like a five year skip but it will be done to accommodate the "real-life distance between seasons". He commented:

"There will be a small time jump, but it's not too significant. It's not like we're jumping ahead five years or anything. We're probably jumping ahead a year or so, kind of like the real-life distance between seasons."

While that does admittedly sound surprising on paper, it actually makes perfect sense in execution. The season 2 finale featured both Matt Murdock and his archenemy Wilson Fisk in unexpected places, which is sure to have resounding effects on not just the DNA of Daredevil: Born Again but the entire MCU. Heck, we already know that the aftermath of the Kingpin's mayoral run will serve as the backdrop to Spider-Man: Brand New Day (as Sheila Rivera is now the mayor of NYC after he stepped down).

The biggest shock in an episode that was full of them came when Matt revealed his true identity as Daredevil to the court - which was broadcast on television for all of New York City to see. In doing so, he was successfully able to bring down the Kingpin and, eventually, end his corrupt stint in office. In order to avoid another prison stunt (and seemingly repeat the endless cycle of incarceration, escape, repeat) Fisk took the deal that the governor was offering and went into exile.

Meanwhile, Matt was eventually arrested and imprisoned. Although it wasn't entirely clear why that happened - as vigilantism is no longer outlawed for superheroes now that Fisk isn't in office - it's likely that his violent war on crime as Daredevil came with consequences now that his identity is public knowledge. And in a somewhat eerie nod to the first season of the original Daredevil series, Matt sat in his cell, facing a wall just like Fisk once did.

We know that the third season will deal with all of this fallout as it has been confirmed that it will adapt iconic Marvel Comics arc The Devil in Cell-Block D. Karen Page will attempt to find a way to free Matt, while Fisk will sport a drastic new look in exile (with set photos suggesting that he will return to New York incognito). Winderbaum says that it's going to be "fun" seeing Matt and Fisk in very different places come season 3, and the time jump will likely be used to show if they have settled into these new "roles" or not.

In the meantime, it looks as if The Defenders will take up protecting the streets of the city, as set photos have confirmed that Krysten Ritter will once again return as Jessica Jones, alongside Mike Colter's Luke Cage and Finn Jones' Danny Rand.

The third season of Daredevil: Born Again is going to be a game-changer. Between these confirmed story beats, Heather Glen's apparent new role, and the adaptation of The Devil in Cell-Block D, it has the potential to be the best season of the show thus far. And considering the high standard of season 2, it's incredible that we can still make a comment like that. Yes, Daredevil: Born Again continues to deliver and we have no doubt that this time-jump will assist it in doing that all over again.

Daredevil: Born Again season 3 is expected to arrive on Disney Plus in March 2027.
