Marvel's greatest hero will reportedly miss out on Avengers: Doomsday

Almost every MCU hero introduced to date is bound to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, with one huge exception.

For seven years now, Earth's Mightiest Heroes have disappeared from the public eye. Part of the problem is that most of the original Avengers are now gone, with Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow paying with their lives to defeat Thanos and also restore half of the life in the universe. Furthermore, Chris Evans's Steve Rogers hung up the shield in favor of a quiet life with his one true love, and Bruce Banner has been trying to live a peaceful existence that doesn't involve the Hulk.

Another key reason why we haven't seen the Avengers steal the spotlight in a long time is that the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn't really needed them. In their absence, other groups of heroes such as the Thunderbolts, the Eternals, the Marvels, and even three versions of Spider-Man have stepped up to save the day. However, dark days are coming, and the multiverse as a whole will need all the help it can get.

Avengers: Doomsday is on the horizon, and it is bound to bring together over 25 iconic Marvel characters in the same film. Veterans and newcomers alike will join forces to fight Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, yet there's one fan-favorite hero that will reportedly miss out on the action.

Tom Holland's Spider-Man will reportedly not appear in Avengers: Doomsday

According to reliable insider Alex Perez (via The Comic Circus), Tom Holland's Spider-Man won't appear in the biggest superhero movie to date, Avengers: Doomsday. If true, this would certainly be an interesting choice. After all, the wall-crawler is the most beloved Marvel character ever created. Furthermore, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be the last MCU film before Avengers: Doomsday, so it could've been easy to assume that the two would be connected.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time we've heard about Tom Holland's Peter Parker missing out on Avengers: Doomsday. Back in 2025, a different report also doubled down on this idea and revealed that Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch won't appear in the movie either. Fortunately, not everything is grim, as there is a very high chance we will see another iteration of the web-slinger steal the spotlight.

Furthermore, it has been reported that Hasbro is planning to unveil its first wave of Marvel Legends figures for Avengers: Doomsday at San Diego Comic-Con. This toy lineup will include Doctor Doom, Steve Rogers, Thor, and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man.

To add more fuel to the fire, insider Alex Perez himself revealed that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's versions of the wall-crawler are the only "legacy heroes" that are confirmed to have an appearance in either Doomsday or Secret Wars. All signs seem to indicate that Tobey will have a role in one of the most ambitious Marvel movies to date, and that prospect alone is very exciting.

Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man spent an entire trilogy completely isolated, never interacting with any other superheroes. Even when he finally had the chance to share the screen with other Marvel characters, he met multiversal versions of himself. We haven't seen him cross paths with fan favorites such as Wolverine, the Fantastic Four, or anyone else. Fortunately, Avengers: Doomsday could finally change that.

As for Tom Holland, the original report states that Marvel is saving Tom Holland's Spider-Man for the events of Avengers: Secret Wars. So we'll definitely see him join forces with Earth's Mightiest Heroes, even if it means having to wait longer.

With so many Marvel heroes currently active, it comes as no surprise that not all of them will appear in both Avengers movies. After all, Marvel also had to mix and match its characters during the Infinity War and Endgame era. However, everyone will have the chance to shine, and we couldn't ask for anything else.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
