With two Avengers movies on the horizon, the Multiverse Saga is heading towards its culmination. The Marvel Studios franchise has been telling this story since Phase Four kicked off in 2021, and now its conclusion is on the horizon. Of course, this is the Marvel Cinematic Universe we're talking about here, so even though Avengers: Doomsday is still two years away, there are plenty more MCU movies and TV shows to enjoy before the storyline's end begins. But still, the seeds for the showdown to save the multiverse are being planted more than ever now.

Both of the upcoming Avengers films will no doubt be major events. Avengers movies always are, but these two have the potential to make waves the likes of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame - the double header that brought about a close to the Infinity Saga. And, like those movies, it will be designed to feature cameos, returns, and special appearances from beloved MCU characters that were important to the Multiverse Saga's storyline.

However, according to a new report, we could see another MCU character return in a very different project; an MCU character that fans weren't sure would appear in the franchise again.

Dane Whitman rumored to return in potential Moon Knight season 2

According to scooper account Film and Series News (formerly Marvel Updates), Dane Whitman is set to make a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Moon Knight season 2. The report also claims that Marvel is hoping to release the second season of the Disney Plus series in 2026, which could very well place it between both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Before we discuss the potential of this MCU rumor, it's important to note that Moon Knight has not been officially renewed for a second season as of yet. The show, which premiered on Disney Plus back in 2022, received positive reviews from fans and critics, with many commenting on how it could become one of the few MCU miniseries designed to function as an ongoing series. A second season has been heavily rumored since, with even star Oscar Isaac suggesting it could happen, but those conversations have ramped up since last year, when a series of reports stated that Marvel planned on bringing it and Hawkeye back for second seasons.

While a 2026 release sounds ambitious, it wouldn't be too surprising if Marvel managed to pull it off. After all, there is an Avengers movie set for release next year and it hasn't even started filming yet, so it's possible. But could it actually happen next year when almost all of the Multiverse Saga's titles have seemingly been confirmed? And could Dane Whitman actually play a part given the uncertainty surrounding the hero known as Black Knight?

The character, portrayed by Kit Harington, made his franchise debut in 2021's Eternals and looked like he was set to be a major part of both the franchise and Multiverse Saga, but his future at Marvel Studios has been in doubt for some time now. Eternals was the first MCU film to underperform, which instantly threw its future into question. And after years of reports stating how the titular characters were set to play a major role in the franchise, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed last year that there were no current plans for Eternals 2, seemingly confirming the more recent reports that the film had been cancelled.

Regardless of whether we see the characters in different projects or not, there has been a clear pivot away from the Celestials and Eternals in recent years. That said, audiences were hoping to see Whitman return at some point, especially after the Eternals post-credits scene featured him and an uncredited voice cameo from Mahershala Ali, marking the latter's official MCU debut as Blade.

Although Moon Knight has remained isolated from the MCU as a whole, a character like Dane Whitman would be one of the few who have real potential for a crossover here. Not only would it give the franchise the chance to build the Black Knight character outside of the Eternals saga, his connection to the supernatural could make him the perfect screen partner for the Fist of Khonshu.
