The Marvel Cinematic Universe will never be the same again. That's exactly what fans of the legendary franchise were saying back in 2019 ahead of Avengers: Endgame, and it's what they are all saying now ahead of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday (and Endgame re-release Avengers Endgame: Encore). But it's not all that they are saying, for the threat this time goes way beyond the bounds of the MCU, as the multiverse itself is in danger. And, with that, all the Marvel worlds we met before and during the franchise's legendary run are under threat.
The person responsible for that threat is Doctor Doom, who has emerged as the brand new villain of the MCU's Multiverse Saga. Portrayed by franchise legend Robert Downey Jr., Victor von Doom is reportedly looking to take vengeance on Earth's Mightiest Heroes for an incursion that seemingly had drastic effects on his world. And now, he's making himself known as the primary threat - with a single purpose: Reshaping the multiverse in his image.
Thor makes some comments about how frightening he is, and the newest trailer very much confirms those comments.
New Avengers: Doomsday trailer confirms that Doom is stronger than Thanos
Marvel Studios officially unveiled Avengers: Doomsday's newest trailer at the D23 Entertainment Showcase and, in doing so, confirmed Marvel fans' biggest fears: Doctor Doom is stronger than Thanos ever was. If you don't believe us, just watch the clip for yourself and ell us otherwise. We'll wait.

The teaser trailer builds upon what the previous one showed us, adding extra context - as well as brand new footage - to everything that went down in that first preview. First and foremost, it confirms that Doom is essentially unstoppable - to an even greater level than a super-charged Thanos who wielded the Infinity Stones.
This has long been a debate among Marvel Comics fans: Who is stronger? Thanos or Doctor Doom? The truth is that there are solid arguments to be made for both. Thanos is physically stronger and could win in a purely hand-to-hand battle, but Doom's intellect, magic, and mystical powers make him a much greater overall threat. The new Avengers: Doomsday trailer makes that clear, all while adding the apparent threat of brute strength, too.
See, both the first trailer and this new one feature a scene in which Thor attempts to wield his legendary axe - Strombreaker - against Doom. Both trailers feature a distinct shot of the villain blocking the blade of the axe with just two fingers, highlighting how Thor - a.k.a. the God of Thunder - wasn't able to overpower that block. However, the newer one features Doom swatting the lighting-charged axe away and blasting Thor across the battlefield. He then sends his own magic into the ground, resurrecting Sentinels to do battle with the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men.
That is how you make an impression. Doom didn't just take out a veteran Avenger, he swatted the most powerful of them all - especially when it comes to raw physical power - away with pure ease. While he may very well be protected by the Latverian Witches' magic, that is just another indicator of the power that he possesses. And that is why Thor told his fellow Avengers that this is a threat that frightens him far more than any other villain that they have ever faced before.
The moment is also a nod to the big battle in Avengers: Infinity War. That film was all about Thor finding his way back to Thanos to kill him for eradicating the Asgardians in the film's opening act. When he successfully tracked down the Mad Titan, he thew his axe straight into the villain's chest, wounding him immensely. It wasn't enough to kill him, with Thanos telling him that he "should have gone for the head" and that allowed the antagonist to snap his fingers, using the Infinity Stones to wipe out half of the universe.
The God of Thunder wounded Thanos immensely, but he also understood the lesson that the Mad Titan had taught him. When he attempts to put that lesson in action against Doctor Doom, the plan fails because, as we all feared, Doom is much more powerful than Thanos in the MCU. And that is a truly terrifying thought.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
