Tom Holland makes the Avengers: Doomsday revelation we didn't see coming

Is Spider-Man in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars? Tom Holland suggests that might be the case when promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

It's been almost five years since we saw Tom Holland's Spider-Man grace our screens but the webslinger is back in action this summer. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to act as the opening of a brand new trilogy from Sony and Marvel Studios that will showcase more mature stories for our favorite wall-crawler - all while uniting him with some Marvel Cinematic Universe favorites like the Hulk and the Punisher. We know that's coming, but the question that MCU fans have been asking is whether Spidey will reunite with his buddies in Avengers: Doomsday.

The larger-than-life ensemble film is the first of a two-part conclusion to the franchise's Multiverse Saga and it features a who's who of Marvel talent. Holland was not among the confirmed cast members for the film, but fans have continued to speculate that he will appear in either it or its 2027 sequel Avengers: Secret Wars. It turns out that those instincts might be spot on.

Tom Holland seemingly confirms Spider-Man's Avengers return

Tom Holland and Zendaya have already begun promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day ahead of its release this summer and the beginnings of the press tour have not disappointed. The pair recently spoke to Cinemania about the film and, during that conversation, the topic of the wider MCU naturally came up.

Holland pointed out that he is known for accidentally spoiling things and, therefore, doesn't know all too much about Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. It's what he said next, however, that has raised some eyebrows.

"I don't know a lot about those movies, I think by design... I have a reputation for spoiling certain things, and I think the studios are keeping me from the juicy details. But when I do get to grace that set, I'm so curious — you know, what does that mean for Peter? And how does that work? I'm very excited about... whatever it is they're doing."

These comments have very quickly caught the attention of fans who think that the star accidentally confirmed that he would be involved in at least one of them. I'll admit, the "when I do get to grace that set" comment sounds like an admission that he will be joining Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars but it may be less of accidental admission and more of a "you guys know I'm in Avengers: Secret Wars, right?". Because let's be honest, the bigger surprises will be who isn't in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Very much believed to be the Avengers: Endgame of the Multiverse Saga, rumors are running rampant that Marvel will be looking to pull off another high-profile, large-scale battle sequence in Avengers: Secret Wars that features stars from all across the Marvel Multiverse, including characters who date back to well before the MCU began. If we're expecting to see more X-Men, perhaps even Wesley Snipes' Blade, and even potential stars from the original Fantastic Four movies, then you can bet we're all expecting to see the MCU's Spider-Man.

What is interesting about Holland's comments is that his hope to "grace that set" may well suggest that he could appear in Avengers: Doomsday as well. The movie is undergoing reshoots right now, so it wouldn't be unthinkable that the studio finds a way to slot in an appearance from the wall-crawler (much as the Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps' post-credits scenes were filmed on the Avengers: Doomsday set (weeks before their respective releases). Although he's not billed as part of the cast, it wouldn't be too surprising if Marvel wanted to feature Holland's webslinger in a post-credits scene to explain why he wasn't present throughout the events of the movie and set up his return in the sequel.

It would be rather ironic if Holland accidentally confirmed Spider-Man's reunion with the Avengers while actively trying to avoid doing that. But his confirmation that he will be on that set at some point in time does seemingly lean into the rumors that have suggested Spidey will be involved in at least one of the upcoming Avengers movies. But don't be surprised if Holland and Marvel work their magic to engineer a cameo appearance in Avengers: Doomsday too. Heck, maybe they already did. Let's not forget Thunderbolts* and Avengers: Doomsday star Florence Pugh is rumored to reprise her role as Yelena Belova in at least one scene in Spider-Man: Brand New Day; who's to say that this wouldn't set up a crossover between the two that continues into Avengers: Doomsday?

It goes without saying that both Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday are shaping up to be the year's two biggest movies. With both expected to easily cross $1 billion at the box office - and $2 billion a very realistic possibility for at least one of them - they will both likely etch their place in the all-time historical rankings too. It would make complete sense for Marvel to attempt to connect them - along with the equally-destined-for-success Avengers: Secret Wars - in order to tell a three-movie story. The only way to do is that is to thread through Spidey's arc into all three of them. And you know what? That's entirely possible.

In the meantime, we can all catch up with Spidey and his Amazing Friends in Spider-Man: Brand New Day this July. The movie will see the webslinger targetted by a new threat capable of jumping from person to person while also exhibiting powers that only Peter Parker himself is seemingly immune to. As he attempts to defeat this apparent new villain, he will receive guidance from Bruce Banner and Frank Castle along the way.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in movie theaters on July 31, 2026. Avengers: Doomsday then premieres on the big screen on December 18, 2026, while sequel Avengers: Secret Wars will make its presence felt on December 17, 2027. Yeah, it's going to be a big couple of years for Marvel!
