It feels redundant to call Avengers: Doomsday the most eagerly-awaited movie of the year at this point, because honestly that feels like a foregone conclusion. Yes, we're saying that in a year which also features the likes of The Devil Wears Prada 2, Dune: Part Three, The Mandalorian and Grogu, and even fellow Marvel movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day. But that's the power of the Avengers movies, the Multiverse Saga's conclusion, and the return of Marvel Studios heavyweights Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans.
Ever since the studio commenced marketing for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie (which saw the release of four major trailers), fans have been waiting for the official teaser trailer. It was officially released to audiences in attendance at CinemaCon, but there has yet to be any announcement of an official online release. And that is driving MCU fans absolutely nuts! Unfortunately, the disappointment continued for fans this week.
Disney's rumored trailer this week was not Avengers: Doomsday
Heading into Monday May 4 it was looking likely that Disney was going to release a major trailer. Industry insider Daniel Richtman, who has a pretty strong track record of announcing trailers ahead of time, revealed that fans could expect a big trailer from the studio on that particular date. The question that fans were asking, however, was: Could this finally have been the moment that Disney and Marvel Studios unveiled the Avengers: Doomsday trailer for the whole world to see?
Unfortunately, the answer to that question was a resounding no. It turns out that Disney and Lucasfilm took the opportunity of the iconic date to release another trailer for upcoming Star Wars movie The Mandalorian and Grogu. And, in many ways, rightfully so; it is, after all, Star Wars Day. Why wouldn't they use the biggest day in the Star Wars calendar to hype up the franchise's next big theatrical release - the first theatrical release for the franchise since 2019!

All that being said, it's understandable that the MCU fans were upset about it not being the Avengers: Doomsday trailer. I mean, this is just another opportunity that Marvel has not made the most of by releasing the highly-sought-after teaser. While nobody was obviously expecting Marvel Studios to get the full focus on Star Wars Day, this is just the most recent in a growing line of potential places that the trailer could have been released (only for it not to be at all).
Granted, the movie is seven months away, so there is a case to be made for the trailer not releasing anytime in the near-future. However, ever since all those footage breakdowns of that CinemaCon trailer have made their way around the internet, the hype has once again increased - with fans begging Marvel to release the teaser online. Once again, they have a point; as Marvel is one of the only major studios that didn't release its CinemaCon trailer / first look online after the event.
Furthermore, it was Marvel that made the decision to roll out promotional material early on, unveiling those first four trailers between the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026. It's only fitting that a more story-focused teaser trailer brings it all together. After all, we're seven months out and still know very little about the plot (including why Doctor Doom looks like Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark). You know what might help with that? The CinemaCon trailer!

In all seriousness, there is hope that the theatrical release of The Mandalorian and Grogu on May 22 could lead to an eventual Avengers: Doomsday trailer release. Rumor has it that the studio might try to replicate its Avatar: Fire and Ash strategy to the Star Wars film's release, attaching a trailer for the upcoming Avengers movie to its theater showings. This would make sense from a business standpoint, allowing that Star Wars platform to promote the MCU, but is it still too early for general Avengers: Doomsday promo as of yet? Probably, but who knows at this point.
If not then, then definitely San Diego Comic-Con this summer (in which Marvel is now expected to have a presence after skipping the event last year). In the meantime, we will sit on the edges of our seats in anticipation for the long-awaited first trailer. Although May 4 was indeed Star Wars Day, we want to be able to honor the franchise by saying "This is the way" by watching the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, too. Maybe we'll get that chance when The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in movie theaters this summer.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
