This week’s new comic books are stacked with moments and developments that will affect their respective universes. There’s more from DC Comics’ summer event, Absolute Power to look forward to. Another No. 1 from the X-Men's From the Ashes Era. And something new from award-winning writer, Jason Aaron.

Yes, there is a lot happening this week, and we're here to dive into all of it. Let’s begin with my comic book pick of the week.

NYX No. 1

  • PICK OF THE WEEK!
  • Writers: Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing
  • Artist: Francesco Mortarino

“This is mutant community. This is mutant pride. This is NYX.”

Kamala Khan discovered she was a mutant and her life has been rather difficult since. Then things got worse for her and the mutants after Fall of X. Thankfully, she and her friends aren't giving up. Wolverine (Laura Kinney), Anole, Prodigy, and Sophie Cuckoo are all doing their best to prosper as mutants in a city that hates and fears them.

On top of that, Ms. Marvel: Mutant Menace ends with Ms. Marvel being seen as a villain in her home town. That will likely come into play in the first issue. Maybe this is the series where Kamala tells her family that she's Ms. Marvel. They know her secret in the MCU and the movies and comic books often imitate each other, so perhaps now is the time.

This will become one of the best comic books of 2024. You heard it here first.

Green Arrow No. 14

  • Writer: Joshua Williamson
  • Artist: Amancay Nahuelpan

At some point, we’ll find out why Oliver Queen gave up the Green Arrow name and started working for Amanda Waller. But first, his family begins looking for the Amazo’s creator, Professor Ivo. The problem is Oliver is looking for him too. This issue will probably end with a standoff between Oliver and Black Canary.

Zatanna: Bring Down The House

  • Writer: Mariko Tamaki
  • Artist: Javier Rodriguez

The first issue of DC’s newest Black Label comic book was a tease of things to come and it ends with a heck of a cliffhanger. Zatanna killed her father and now something is chasing her because of that. Is it her dad or something more dangerous? And who is the mystery woman showing up to Zatanna's shows?

Ultimate Black Panther No. 6

  • Writer: Bryan Edward Hill
  • Artist: Carlos Nieto

This is the final issue of Bryan Edward Hill’s first volume of Ultimate Black Panther. That means something crazy will happen besides T’Challa and his team fighting Ra and Khonshu. And, according to the ComiXology description, T’Challa will tap into powers unknown to him to protect Wakanda from kings of the Upper and Lower Kingdoms. T'Challa using these powers could be why the Ultimate Universe’s Sorcerer Supreme appears in Ultimate Black Panther No. 9.

Absolute Power: Task Force VII No. 2

  • Writer: John Layman
  • Artist: Max Raynor

There’s a new ruler of Atlantis and he’s the Task Force VII Amazo, Depth Charge and if the Atlantians don’t bend the knee, he'll steal their powers. Of course, Atlantis isn't going down easily. Jackson Hyde and Aquaman’s family are fighting back.

Something is Killing the Children No. 40

  • Writer: James Tynion
  • Artist: Werther Dell'Edera

This is the final issue of past tales of Erica Slaughter. They’ve been entertaining, but informative too. You learn how Erica became so skilled and you also see some of the journeys that she’s been on. This will come into play when writer James Tynion brings readers from past stories and into the present.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles No. 1

  • Writer: Jason Aaron
  • Artist: Joelle Jones

Jason Aaron brings his talent to one of the most recognized franchises ever. According to the description, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have individually left New York, but evil will bring them back together.

You’ll want to grab this issue. Jason Aaron’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be a widely talked about comic book series you won't want to miss.

Vengeance Of The Moon Knight No. 7

  • Writer: Jed MacKay
  • Artist:  Alessandro Cappuccio

Vengeance Of The Moon Knight has been the best series tying into the Marvel Comics event, Blood Hunt. Tigra, Reese, Soldier, and 8-Ball have defended the travelers of the night and helped Khonshu escape his Asgardian prison (Blood Hunt No. 4). Now that Marc Spector and Khonshu are back, what happens next?

The Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives! No. 4

  • Writer: Dan Watters, Ram V
  • Artist: Matthew Roberts, Dave Stewart

The Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives! has been the most underrated comic book of 2024. If you haven’t been reading it, stop what you’re doing, get the first three issues, and thank me later.

Absolute Power: Origins

  • Writer: John Ridley
  • Artist: Alitha Martinez

We’ll finally learn why Amanda Waller waged war against the metahumans. Some comic books have mentioned that it had to do with the death of her daughter. Plus, seeing her raise Brainiac Queen like her child (Absolute Power: Ground Zero) seemed to hint at this being her reason. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out the truth.
