Hugh Jackman's Wolverine bears his claws in new Deadpool 3 promo
The promo train for Deadpool and Wolverine has begun. The movie that was once known as Deadpool 3 unveiled its first teaser trailer at the Super Bowl and that only increased the already monumental levels of hype for the Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure - an adventure that could very well be the biggest movie of the year.
There is a lot of excitement surrounding this one, especially because it brings back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, seven years after the character's "final appearance" in 2017's masterpiece Logan. Not only that, but it will allow us all to see him don the legendary yellow and blue suit that he is renowned for wearing in the comics (which Jackman never sported in two decades of X-Men movies).
With the film's release on the horizon, fans are getting more and more sneak peeks. Now, another new promo shot of the titular pair has surfaced, and it looks to be the first non-artwork look at Jackman's Logan as he bears his claws.
Deadpool and Wolverine standee unveils new promo image of Logan
A new theater standee for Deadpool and Wolverine has been spotted in Japan and it features new promo shots of Hugh Jackman's Logan and Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson in their iconic suits. Deadpool is sitting on the standee itself, crossing his legs in a very sultry way, while Wolverine just looks angry, brandishing his iconic claws.
Take a look at it below:
While this is not the first promotional image of the pair to make its way online, it is pretty significant as it's the first one to feature an actual photo of Jackman's Wolverine. Merchandise spotted at CinemaCon featured our first look at him wearing the iconic Wolverine cowl, but both of those shots were heavily posterized artwork. This one appears to be unedited, giving us the clearest glimpse of what he'll look like since the set photos surfaced last year.
Now is just another time to say that the suit looks absolutely amazing in live-action. It's so unbelievably comic-accurate that, with the exception of the yellow sleeves, it literally looks like it's been taken straight from the pages of Marvel Comics (or the equally iconic X-Men: The Animated Series).
The standee also features a number of small TV screens, each with new promo stills from Deadpool and Wolverine in them. While they aren't all clear, the first one is definitely a shot of the dysfunctional duo standing side-by-side, likely from the same scene that the film's first set photos showcased.
A long-awaited moment for X-Men fans
Needless to say, X-Men fans are ready to see Hugh Jackman wear Wolverine's signature colors in a live-action movie for the first time ever. The fact that this is the third Deadpool movie is undoubtedly a draw in and of itself, but the return of Wolverine (for the first time in the MCU, too) has to be Deadpool and Wolverine's biggest selling point. Having the two of them team up is just a bonus - and a welcome one after the pair's last on-screen run-in (in X-Men Origins: Wolverine) wasn't very well-received.
As far as legendary superhero actors go, Jackman is among the most iconic. He's been playing Wolverine for over two decades, appearing in X-Men, X2, The Last Stand, First Class, and Days of Future Past as well as his own trilogy X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine, and Logan. As the Fox film saga opted for a less comic-accurate approach, Deadpool and Wolverine will be his first time donning the character's instantly recognizable suit, and that has left fans hoping that some of his X-Men co-stars will join him so that they can get the same comic-accurate treatment.
While one X-Men star has cast doubt on a potential cameo in the movie, we do know that Aaron Stanford will be returning as Pyro for the first time since the third movie in the original Fox franchise. It's not yet clear if he and Jackman's Wolverine will cross paths, but that's undoubtedly going to be just one of the potential crossovers in a movie that is rumored to have a lot of exciting cameos. Let's just hope that more X-Men are among them.
The MCU is currently in the process of introducing mutants and the world of the X-Men to the MCU. It's an understandably slow process, but it's one that is beginning to bear fruit. Ms. Marvel and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever have both made references to the mutants, while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness brought back Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier in a cameo appearance. Though Jackman's return as Wolverine isn't expected to be long-term, it could be the most significant step Marvel Studios makes on its way to introducing its own version of the X-Men.
Deadpool and Wolverine is released on July 26, 2024.
