Project Hail Mary gets an unexpected digital streaming release update

It sounds like Project Hail Mary could have nabbed itself a release date on PVOD digital platforms, but not everything is set in stone just yet.

UPDATE: It has been officially confirmed that Project Hail Mary will release on digital streaming platforms on May 12. It has already been released on PVOD services in the UK as of May 11.

Fans all over the world are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Project Hail Mary on digital platforms and home media. The visually stunning science fiction drama is a thrill-ride that certainly captured the hearts, minds, and souls of moviegoers when it broke box office records during its run on the silver screen and it will no doubt do it all again on TV screens whenever it is available for purchase.

The Ryan Gosling-led film bucked the typical Amazon MGM trend in that it didn't go to general streaming after the usual 45-day window due to the sheer scale and size of the film, with its $200 million budget requiring a strong theatrical run to earn that cash back. However, it has stayed off all platforms - including even digital Premium Video On Demand ones - well beyond that window because of its overperformance in theaters, and it still isn't entirely clear when it will debut on those platforms. However, a recent update suggests that it might be available for purchase sooner than you think.

Project Hail Mary potentially coming to digital platforms on May 12

Rumor has it that Project Hail Mary could be coming to digital streaming platforms on May 12. According to WhenToStream, which provides BlueSky user @robmontoya.bsky.social‘s images of a DIRECTV guide as evidence, the film is reportedly set to arrive on PVOD services on this particular date. And this would make sense considering that it has been a rumored potential release date for sometime now, but it's also important to point out that Amazon MGM Studios have not officially announced this. That means that all reports should be taken with a grain of salt until otherwise confirmed by the studio.

It's also worth pointing out that, regardless of whether it releases on May 12 or not, this isn't referring to general streaming (although the movie will eventually stream on Amazon's own Prime Video), it's about its digital streaming release date - when it will presumably be available to purchase on digital platforms such as Apple TV, Fandango At Home and the Prime Video store (as well as platforms like Sky Store in the UK). The Prime Video streaming date will come after that.

One thing, however, that may prevent it from arriving anywhere on May 12 is the recent extension in movie theaters that it received due to how well it was performing. Project Hail Mary's overwhelming success saw Amazon MGM make the decision to extend its run in theaters, leading to directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord announcing that it wouldn't be available anywhere to stream for a long time. It's unclear if this includes the digital format as well.

Another thing worth noting is that Project Hail Mary is currently listed as having an August 11 home media release (meaning that it will be available to purchase on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD on that date), so it would need to be released on digital and streaming prior to that. Digital will likely come first as the movie is adopting the typical theatrical release format - a first for Amazon MGM - which makes May 12 a feasible release date for that format. General streaming on Prime Video would then likely come sometime in June / July.

Project Hail Mary was a resounding success story at the box office. Directed by Lord and Miller, the critically-acclaimed film is based on Andy Weir's novel of the same name, with Ryan Gosling bringing teacher Ryland Grace to life. It is set in a world in which the sun has begun showing signs of death due to a potential virus (or, more specifically, a bacteria known as Astrophage feeding on it), resulting in Grace being tasked by the government to board the Hail Mary and figure out what's going on. He makes an unlikely friend along the way in an adventure that deserves to be seen on the biggest screen imaginable.

The film overperformed by no small margins, breaking box office records in its opening weekend by delivering numbers that far exceeded any other non-franchise, non-superhero movie. It also showed that it had legs, performing consistently for weeks after that as the positive word-of-mouth allowed for smaller daily and weekly dropoffs. It has currently grossed a total of $656 million, making it one of 2026's biggest movies, and considering that it is still in movie theaters in many areas that number will likely continue to rise for some time to come.

The question is: Will fans at home be able to watch it alongside the moviegoers who will watch it on the big screen anytime soon? Here's hoping that this new update is correct so that the answer to that question can indeed be a "yes". We'll find out that answer very, very soon.
