DC fans have been eagerly awaiting updates about The Batman - Part II. The upcoming Matt Reeves film has been in development since its predecessor enjoyed remarkable success at the box office in 2022, but it has made very little progress in terms of getting to the screen. That's not to say that things haven't been happening behind the scenes (they have) but repeated delays and a whole brand new DC Studios have resulted in fans growing concerned about the film's existence.
Thankfully, there's no need to be concerned for another one of the stars of the upcoming movie has spoken about his involvement in it, confirming that it is indeed still happening - and that he has managed to work out the biggest issue facing his return. And, with that, here's what he has to say.
Andy Serkis confirms The Batman 2 filming schedule has been worked out
Andy Serkis made a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast to promote his new film Animal Farm and, naturally, the subject of The Batman - Part II came up. Although the star, who plays Alfred Pennyworth in the movie, couldn't reveal any specific plot details, he did confirm that he is going to be able to do the film, as "we've figured the schedule out".
See, Serkis is also set to film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (which he is also directing), with production set to kick off this May. Production on The Batman - Part II is expected to take place through the summer (although there are still elements about that that are a bit more vague), meaning that there will be a pretty significant overlap. The star confirmed that it would be "tight" for him, but he is clearly excited that he will be able to return as Alfred in the upcoming sequel.
So, while Serkis won't be able to join the production until later in the year, he has confirmed that he will be involved. And, interestingly enough, this essentially confirms that Warner Bros. has indeed finally mapped out a planned filming schedule.

Although there were reports claiming that the film would begin production in April / May, there hasn't been any movement on it since. In fact, Pattinson revealed recently that they wouldn't begin filming for another "couple of months", suggesting that mid-summer was looking like more of a likely possibility at this point. And the overall vagueness of that statement had fans worried that the film might not happen at all.
It sounds ridiculous to say, but considering all of the secrecy surrounding the movie - and, perhaps more importantly, DC Studios' new vision for a separate DC Universe with a new Batman - fans were concerned that the sequel might be scrapped. As successful as Matt Reeves' The Batman was in 2022, it was created for a very different Warner Bros. And with James Gunn and Peter Safran now overseeing their DCU, audiences were worried that the studio had simply moved on to a new story instead.
Thankfully, Reeves' Batman franchise is alive and well. Look no further than 2024's critically-acclaimed HBO series The Penguin, which brought back Colin Farrell as the titular villain in an eight-part drama that dominated the 2024 - 2025 awards circuit. That series also bridges the gap between the first film and its upcoming sequel, in which Farrell will reprise his role.
Still, though, hearing Serkis talk about The Batman 2 and the fact that there is a filming schedule in place for it is extremely reassuring. Even though it might not kick off in the spring like the initial reports suggested, any production update is a reminder that The Batman - Part II is still happening. And with its October 2027 release date on the horizon, it sounds like Serkis, Pattinson, Farrell, Reeves, and all of us will be heading back to Gotham City in the not-too-distant future. Needless to say, that is music to all of our ears!
Serkis also echoed co-star Colin Farrell's previous statements about the script, saying that it's "amazing... yeah, it's a great script." Horowitz also mentioned Pattinson's previous comments about the film being "a huge swing" and that it's "deep, dark, and emotional" - to which Serkis gleefully concurred, steering clear on shedding anymore light on the mysterious film.
The upcoming DC film features a star-studded cast, with Pattinson, Serkis, and Farrell being joined by Jeffrey Wright, and Barry Keoghan (who return from the first film as well), alongside newcomers Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, and Charles Dance. What a spectacle this one is going to be!
The Batman - Part II arrives in movie theaters on October 1, 2027.
