UPDATE: Toy Story 5 has officially defied expectations, bringing in a total of $160 million domestically in its opening weekend and a worldwide total of $312 million. This is well ahead of the global opening of Toy Story 4 and has officially set a new franchise record as a result of that. What an incredible opening weekend performance!
Box office results have been as impossible to predict as the ongoing World Cup matches. Films like The Mandalorian and Grogu—which were supposed to be guaranteed hits—have made history for all the wrong reasons. On the other hand, smaller projects like Backrooms and Obsession have been breaking records left and right, despite being created on smaller budgets. As such, there was a lot of curiosity as to how Toy Story 5 would perform at the box office.
Much like Star Wars, Toy Story is a widely beloved franchise with multiple installments under its belt (although not nearly as many). However, there have also been discussions about how necessary a fifth movie really was, just like there were conversations surrounding whether the Mandalorian and Grogu needed to happen.
Many fans believe that Buzz and Woody's story came to a perfect culmination in Toy Story 3, so why did Disney keep the franchise going? Would it still resonate with fans as it once did? Or would it suffer the same fate as the recent adventure set in a galaxy far, far away? Well, the answer is a clear and astounding "no".
It's still early days, but the family-friendly film is already leaving a big mark on the global box office.

Toy Story 5 officially scores the best opening weekend for the franchise as it passes the $129.3 million mark
Toy Story 5 has soared to infinity and beyond during its opening weekend. The highly acclaimed film earned $17.5 million alone during early Thursday preview screenings, surpassing its predecessor, Toy Story 4, which earned $12 million. Furthermore, Toy Story 5 secured the second-highest opening day for an animated film domestically, earning a whopping $71 million on Friday (including the early previews). The Incredibles 2 currently holds the record with $71.2 million.
Yes, The Incredibles 2 was nearly dethroned.
Additionally, Toy Story 5 also earned another $58.3 million internationally. In total, Toy Story 5 earned $129.3 million at the worldwide box office from Friday showings alone, which is nothing short of impressive. To put that number into perspective, Toy Story 4 earned a total of $120.9 million domestically during its entire opening weekend. At this pace, Pixar's latest project is set to have the biggest box-office opening in the entire franchise.
Additionally, Toy Story 5 opened at No. 1 in most markets, including Mexico ($11.4M), China, the UK, France ($3M), Spain ($2.7M), Italy, Australia ($2M), and Brazil ($1.9M). The only places where the latest Pixar film didn't open at No. 1 were India and Vietnam.
Original forecasts predicted that Toy Story 5 would earn $140 million domestically through its entire opening weekend. Those expectations have been shattered, and the ceiling has been raised to $175 million. Globally, the movie is expected to earn $275 million. For comparison, The Mandalorian and Grogu grossed $318.9 million at the global box office over the span of nearly a month. Toy Story 5 could surpass that figure within a week.
Toy Story 5's biggest competitor, Supergirl, is set to be released on June 26, 2026. However, things aren't looking so bright for DC's upcoming adventure, as it has been projected that it will open to somewhere between $47 million and $65 million domestically. Because competition isn't as fierce, there's nothing stopping Toy Story from completely dominating the box office. After all, previously released movies have slowed down at the domestic box office, with the five highest-grossing movies of the weekend earning as follows (as reported by Deadline):
- Toy Story 5 - $170 million (expected)
- Disclosure Day - $17.2 million
- Obsession - $14.2 million
- Backrooms - $7.5 million
- Scary Movie $6.6 million
There's a clear gap between Toy Story 5 and the rest of the films. Granted, this is the opening weekend of Pixar's latest film, and there will undoubtedly be a drop in the second weekend. However, if Toy Story 4 crossed the one-billion mark at the global box office at the end of its theatrical run, then its follow-up will almost certainly achieve the same goal.
The future seems bright for Buzz, Woody, and the rest of the iconic toys that we've seen throughout the course of the years. Who knows? Maybe the success of this film will eventually lead to another entry in the franchise.
Toy Story 5 is now in theaters.
