Arrow: Diggle Will Get Code Name, Won’t Be Most Popular Guess

Sometimes popular consensus turns out to be wrong. For example, comic book fans thought they might have zeroed in on a code name for John Diggle on Arrow. It would make sense for him to have one, given that everyone else on Team Arrow has one, and the early pics of his new costume for Season 4 led to a very reasonable guess as to what it might be.

It’s just not correct, according to executive producer Marc Guggenheim.

He came flat out with it in an interview with Green Arrow TV, shooting down the most popular theory with the same precision that Oliver Queen has when shooting a bow.

"No. He won’t be the Guardian."

So, no Green Lantern, no Guardian. The man who plays Diggle, David Ramsey, has also hinted that he won’t be getting super powers either, which makes it unlikely he’d become Black Lightning, another popular guess from comic book enthusiasts.

Maybe he won’t assume an identity from the comics at all, but one invented just for him. That’s certainly something Guggenheim’s other comments on the subject might suggest.

"We’re going to give him a code name out of practicality. I can’t tell you when it’s going to happen, because every time I write it, I end up taking it out, because it feels forced. I need to find the right moment for it. But we have the code name, DC’s approved it… but it’s unique to Diggle, and that’s what I like about it."

That’s about as intriguing a tease as it’s possible to give. Props to you Mr. Guggenheim, for giving us yet another reason to tune in when Arrow starts Season 4 on Wednesday, October 8 on The CW.
