Marvel fans have spent the better part of a week dissecting the newly-released Avengers: Doomsday trailer. It's a big deal because they were prepared to spend the second half of the week doing that at San Diego Comic-Con, but Marvel Studios surprised them with an early release - unveiling the exact trailer that sent CinemaCon attendees into meltdown just a few short months ago.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe's next foray into the Multiverse Saga's final chapter will see a multitude of MCU stars, Marvel stars of yesteryear, and the X-Men themselves take center stage in what will undoubtedly be a showcase for Marvel fans of all ages. But there was one long-rumored character who didn't appear in that Avengers: Doomsday trailer and it has left fans asking a lot of questions: Most importantly, will he appear?
Tobey Maguire is not officially confirmed as part of Avengers: Doomsday's main cast
Marvel fans have a lot of questions for Avengers: Doomsday - so many that the movie probably won't answer them all. One of the most persistent, however, has been: Is Tobey Maguire in Avengers: Doomsday? The star, who portrayed Spider-Man in the classic Sam Raimi trilogy (and recently reprised the role in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home) has been heavily rumored to appear in the upcoming film but the official picture is a lot less convincing.
As it stands, Tobey is not officially a part of Avengers: Doomsday's main cast. Marvel Studios confirmed the full cast in March 2025 with an infamous five-hour livestream which featured a series of named set chairs - each one confirming a star from the film. While the film does feature an eclectic line-up of current MCU stars, classic MCU stars, Marvel stars from before the franchise's existence, and even the X-Men, Maguire's name was not mentioned among them.

That said, it doesn't officially rule him out either. Remember, Chris Evans' name wasn't listed in the cast announcement, but Marvel Studios has subsequently confirmed his involvement via two teaser trailers. Likewise, Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine are both rumored to make appearances, too, with neither one of them getting official confirmation either. And considering both of those are Marvel legacy stars who recently made their debuts in the MCU - just as Maguire has - it's quite possible that they will all appear.
The legendary Spider-Man star first appeared in the MCU franchise in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home when he teamed with the current Spider-Man, Tom Holland, and his predecessor, Andrew Garfield, in an epic battle that saw all three Spideys battle villains from across the MCU's multiverse. That film proved to be one of the few within the Multiverse Saga that actually dealt with another world, so that quite possibly makes it one of the most important ahead Avengers: Doomsday.
Although Maguire and Garfield aren't expected to return in this summer's Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the pair have been repeatedly rumored to appear in at least one of these two upcoming Avengers movies. And that brings us to our next point: There have been a lot of rumors suggesting that Maguire's webslinger will face off against Hugh Jackman's Wolverine at some point in the films in a nod to the two faces of the Marvel franchise long before the MCU began.

In fact, a number of potential "set photos" leaked online that seemingly showed Maguire in his Spider-Man suit alongside Jackman and Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool. It us unclear as to whether those leaks were actually real or simply AI designed to mislead fans, but after Avengers: Doomsday suffered some very real leaks just a few weeks ago, fan response to those rumored set photos have changed - with many now believing them to be real.
Another report claims that Maguire and Jackman's respective heroes won't actually appear in Avengers: Doomsday but that the two will have main roles in 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars as the last few surviving heroes of the multiverse (potentially with some Young Avengers thrown in there too) will seek to put the multiverse back together.
So, taking all of that into account: Officially, no Tobey Maguire is not in Avengers: Doomsday. That doesn't, however, mean that he isn't in it. Welcome to the multiverse of madness.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in movie theaters on December 18, 2026.
