Superman / Wonder Woman: Futures End #1

Writer: Charles Soule / Artist: Bart Sears / Cover: Tom Raney

Official Synopsis

The battle between the God of War and Nemesis can only spell doom for humanity—but can Kal restore Diana to her senses before it’s too late?

Spoiler-Free Reaction

Charles Soule does it again.  The star of this issue is Wonder Woman and it’s great to see her drive the story.  Soule also uses a pretty smart device to allow for Superman’s presence.  This issue mixes quite a bit of internal conflict, character development, and plot development.  As we follow Wonder Woman, we’re easily drawn into the mysteries of her dilemma and how she goes about figuring it out.  The ending of the issue is a nice character arc for Wonder Woman.  As for the art, I was beginning to wonder if Bart Sears was heavily influenced by early 1980s DC.  Many of the panels looked like an homage to comics of that era.  I would say that this is another solid issue by Soule.

Spoilerific Plot Points

  • Nemesis has caused Wonder Woman to hallucinate — making her think that she’s been fighting Nemesis’s enemies.  After all this time, Wonder Woman has been stuck on Tartarus.
  • The Superman that helps Wonder Woman is a Superman from four years ago.
  • Themyscira is the only place not infected by Nemesis.  The Justice League and all heroes have already fallen.
  • Wonder Woman figures out that Nemesis killed Eirene, the Goddess of Peace, as a strategic move.
  • Wonder Woman enters the tomb of Eirene and emerges as the new Goddess of Peace.
  • This issue has one of the more stronger connections with Futures End.  There’s the mention of Superman being in exile and the war with Earth 2.
