Former Marvel stars spotted near MCU set sparking comeback speculation

Two big comebacks might be upon us as former Marvel stars are in the same city where an upcoming superhero project is being filmed.

Who doesn't love it when a character we thought was long gone makes a Marvel Cinematic Universe comeback? Fortunately, we've seen many of those moments in the last few years. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Peter Parkers suited up once again in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Wesley Snipes' Blade and Jennifer Garner's Elektra teamed up with an unlikely group of Mutants in Deadpool & Wolverine, and Matt Murdock swung onto the small screen yet again thanks to Daredevil: Born Again.

The Devil of Hell's Kitchen has been at the center of many discussions lately. For starters, fans feel hopeful that he could have a proper team-up with Tom Holland's Spider-Man, as hinted by an easter egg hidden in Born Again. Furthermore, we're all glad that he'll finally sport the "DD" logo in his suit, as revealed by some exhilarating set photos. Last, but certainly not least, we're excited for him to reunite with Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones after almost nine years. But is the super-powered investigator the only hero set to make an unexpected MCU appearance? Or could more follow her lead?

The Defenders' stars spotted in New York, where Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is being filmed

Is it too early to call it a comeback? Mike Colter, who portrayed the role of Luke Cage in the Marvel Netflix era, uploaded a picture to social media revealing that he's in New York, where the second season of Daredevil: Born Again is currently being filmed. Furthermore, Finn Jones, who was known as the immortal Iron Fist in his own Netflix stand-alone series, also posted a picture with the caption "New York, New York". That means four out of four Defenders are in the same city at the same time, which also happens to be the same place where an upcoming MCU project is being filmed. Is this just a big coincidence? Well, recent rumors indicate otherwise.

Remember how Matt Murdock stated that he'll "need an army" to take down the Kingpin of Crime and his new evil regime as New York's mayor? It was reported that such a team will also include the rest of the original Defenders: Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. At long last, we could see these beloved heroes join the MCU after the cancellation of their respective Netflix shows.

Better yet, maybe we won't have to wait long for an official announcement. Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is being filmed on the streets of New York, which means anyone near can see exactly what's going on behind the scenes. We already know Matt will sport his "Shadowland" suit (complete with the chest logo), and that he and Karen will be on the run, potentially escaping the Kingpin of crime. If these "surprises" are already public knowledge, you'd imagine Marvel would try to get hold of the narrative for any upcoming news.

Soon after it was officially announced that Krysten Ritter would be back as Jessica Jones, set photos surfaced giving us her first look in costume right next to Charlie Cox's Daredevil. As a result, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume that Disney could reveal the return of Iron Fist and Luke Cage before their respective actors show up on set for the whole world to see. If not, we could get an accidental "first-look" in the form of set pictures. But when could this hypothetical announcement take place?

It's worth keeping in mind that San Diego Comic-Con is just around the corner, taking place from Jul. 24 to Jul. 27. It's possible Marvel will hold off the big reveal until then, when all four actors come on stage to announce what Daredevil: Born Again season 2 will really be a Defenders get-together. Granted, there's always the chance that other Marvel characters, such as The Punisher, will also join the fight against the Kingpin in a Devil's Reign-esque story. But for the time being, all signs seem to indicate that Matt wasn't joking around and he will, in fact, create an army of his own comprised of three of his former work friends.

New York citizens in the MCU will need to be defended from its current mayor, and it seems the right team for such a task will soon reunite.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 will be released in March 2026.
