Marvel officially crowns a new Sorcerer Supreme (and it's an unexpected choice)

Marvel Comics will crown a new Sorcerer Supreme, but not before the involvement of the  Vishanti, an epic battle, and a trip to Limbo to fight Madelyne Pryor.

During New York Comic Con, Marvel reported that there would be a search for a new Sorcerer Supreme. This will happen after One World Under Doom concludes. As of now, readers don’t know what happens to Victor von Doom for him to relinquish the title, but we can guess it has to do with him killing Valeria Richards. However, we won’t know for sure until One World Under Doom concludes.

In the press release, Marvel said that the new Sorcerer Supreme will be:

“One willing to defy tradition, break every rule, and chart a bold, new path. Will this rogue Sorcerer Supreme bring magic in the Marvel Universe to new heights or leave it in ruin?”

It didn’t take long for the announcement on who would take over as the mystical protector of this realm. That's right, Marvel Comics has revealed that Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch, would become the new Sorcerer Supreme.

Wanda Maximoff takes over as the Sorcerer Supreme

In an Instagram post (that you can see above), Marvel reveals that the Vishanti crown Agatha Harkness as the Sorcerer Supreme. After fighting her former mentor, Wanda wakes up in Limbo and has to fight its ruler, Madelyne Pryor. Meanwhile, mystical threats take advantage of the confusion and passing of power. After his defeat at the hands of Doctor Doom, we can assume one of them could be the Dread Dormammu.

"Determined to fulfill her sacred new duty, Wanda expands her scope and redefines her power to protect the world like no Sorcerer Supreme ever has!"
Marvel

For the last couple of years, Steve Orlando has taken Wanda Maximoff and made her one of the most powerful beings in all of comics. That should be surprising because that didn't seem possible. The Scarlet Witch was already immensely powerful and feared throughout the magical community and beyond. Nevertheless, fans have witnessed Orlando take Wanda’s abilities to new heights with creative moves and having her make new kinds of spells. It's been brilliant.

It's only right that he would be the one writing this series. Throughout his multiple runs (two Scarlet Witch solo titles, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, and The Vision and the Scarlet Witch), he’s shown that there are no limits to what Wanda can do. This series will add to his already amazing legacy. However, you have to wonder how Doctor Strange will feel once word gets to him in Asgard.

Writer’s note: Doctor Strange is now the Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard (Doctor Strange of Asgard by Derek Landy). And thanks to Loki killing Thor in Immortal Thor No. 24, he’s stuck in Asgard for the foreseeable future..

Bernard Chang is going to do wonders on this series, too. He’s an amazing artist (you can see his work here). Combined, he and Steve Orlando will bring Wanda to new heights as she goes from being the Queen of Chaos Magic to the Master of the Mystic Arts.
